Sisters Influencing Society (SIS), is a young women's health initiative that uses mentoring as a platform for teaching healthy life skills and strengthening social, emotional, and academic support systems, for young women ages 11 - 19 who live in the greater Albion area.
Sisters Influencing Society is an outgrowth of the African American Women’s Health Initiative which had the goal of improving the preconception health of African American women, strengthening family and community support for women and infancies and eliminating race disparities in infant mortality. During 2010, its inaugural year, AHCA facilitated health education dinners where mentoring relationships were established, and community dialogue sessions took place. Through the program we determined that all races needed to be included, and that focusing on teenage pregnancy prevention alone was not the answer, instead a program needed to be developed that would focus on efforts to support becoming successful young women, all the while avoiding pregnancy.
The purpose of SIS is to strengthen family and community support for young women, ages 11-19, with an emphasis on African-American young women. Through the support of adult women mentors, the program seeks to engage young people in a high level of structured out of school time volunteer community service, discussions of future life options, and healthy living. The over-arching goal of the program is to ensure that within one year students participating in SIS will be significantly less likely to have failed a course, have been suspended from school, involved in disciplinary issues of any kind or gotten pregnant.
Each time SIS meets mentees are provided a different experience and are given the opportunity to interact with each other, their mentors, and any invited guests. At the beginning of each session we fellowship while enjoying a meal, and then a program is presented. The topic varies; however, they are pertinent to our youth and their day to day challenges.
Project activities take place throughout the school year, though special activities and community outreach activities will continue during the summer months except in the month of July.
